Hyperallergic’s Best Art Books of 2022 List features The Lost Architecture of Jean Welz

Billy Anania, arts critic and architecture editor for Hyperallergic, reviews The Lost Architecture of Jean Welz leading to a feature for the magazine’s “Best Art Books of 2022” list. Reflecting upon the “deeply personal and revelatory journey” that readers vicariously travel with Wyeth, “digging through photographs and blueprints, interviews with Welz’s relatives, and [Wyeth’s] own experience piecing it all together,” Anania celebrates Wyeth’s investigation, as “tiny details become breakthroughs of grand proportions.”
Noting Welz’s exclusion from architecture studies and resistance to Le Corbusier’s Five Points, Anania questions: “Was he punished for refusing to fall in line, or did his style merely diverge from Modernism’s market futures? Perhaps Jean Welz did not exist for a time, but thanks to Wyeth, he does once again.”
