Jana Zimmer’s moving memoir Chocolates from Tangier delves into her parents’ harrowing experiences as Holocaust survivors, interweaving mixed media and digital collaged works. A trove of family photos and documents, mostly in Czech, were left with Zimmer when her mother died. With just a few cryptic notes as explanation, her only child struggled to knit the family’s past together. Zimmer’s task has been the seemingly impossible — to remember where she had never been, for her parents, who had wanted only to forget, and to find her place between them.
